Based on your passport and itinerary, there are typically four paths for entering China. Find the one that fits:
- Mutual Visa Exemption: Based on bilateral agreements; allowed stay varies by country.
- Unilateral Visa-Free Entry: Short-term visa-free entry for tourism, business, or family visits for nationals of specific countries.
- 240-Hour Visa-Free Transit: For travelers transiting through China to a third country (or region), with strict port and route restrictions.
- Regular Visa: If none of the above apply, you need to apply for a visa (e.g., L tourist visa) at a Chinese embassy or consulate before departure.
Which Countries Are Visa-Free for China in 2026?
Two pools qualify. First, 32 countries with mutual visa exemption agreements — including Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, the UAE, and Serbia (full list below). Second, 50 countries under the unilateral 30-day visa-free policy — most EU member states plus the UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, and Brazil. The unilateral policy currently runs until December 31, 2026.
These lists change frequently — Canada and the UK were the most recent additions, effective February 17, 2026. This page was checked against the National Immigration Administration list on 2026-08-20; always confirm with official sources before booking.

30-Day Unilateral Visa-Free Entry
Under the latest 2026 policy, if you hold an ordinary passport from one of the following 50 countries, you can enter China visa-free for tourism, business, or family visits for up to 30 days. The stay period starts from midnight of the day after entry. (Checked 2026-08-20.)

240-Hour Visa-Free Transit
💡 Note: If your country is already listed under “Mutual Visa Exemption” or “30-Day Unilateral Visa-Free” above, you can skip this section entirely — its conditions are far more restrictive. The countries listed below are those that can only enter China for a short visa-free stay through this transit policy after removing those already covered by the 30-day visa-free pool.
The 240-hour transit visa-free policy is not a general tourist visa. It is designed specifically for travelers “transiting to a third destination.” After removing countries already in the 30-day visa-free pool, this policy primarily covers nationals of the following countries:

- Europe: Czech Republic, Lithuania, Ukraine
- Americas: United States, Mexico
- Asia: Indonesia
Core Route Requirement (Mandatory)
Your full itinerary must strictly follow the pattern: Country A (departure) -> China -> Country B (destination) on a connecting or continuous journey.
- ✅ Correct example: Los Angeles, USA -> Beijing, China -> Bangkok, Thailand (A -> China -> B)
- ❌ Wrong example: Los Angeles, USA -> Beijing, China -> Seattle, USA (A -> China -> A — you will be denied entry)
- ❌ Wrong example: Unable to provide a confirmed onward ticket with a fixed date and seat.
Restrictions on Transit Visa-Free Entry
- Limited movement area: You may only travel within the province/city zone designated by the port of entry (e.g., Shanghai covers Shanghai + Jiangsu + Zhejiang; Beijing covers Beijing + Tianjin + Hebei). Cross-zone travel is not allowed.
- No loopholes: If you hold separately booked tickets and cannot prove a continuous itinerary, customs has the right to deny you entry.
